Unwavering is the moniker of songwriter Matt Bennett who began the project in earnest in 2018 after a move to Edinburgh served as a conscious break from previous efforts in Leeds-based prog/punk rock band Unwave. The music is stark, minimal, cavernous reflecting musical influences such as Low, Belong, Cocteau Twins as well as the surrounding landscapes of the Pentlands and the Forth. These are apparent on debut album 'Freeze Thaw Chorus' an expansive record that sounds at various times either melancholic, defiant, eerie or huge.
The 8 tracks were laid out to be greater than the sum of their parts and tied by an almost subterranean atmosphere whilst recording on location in a large chapel gives the album it's live feel. Subject matter is abstract describing concepts like scale, compression, types of distance, natural disaster, daily rituals and loss of familiarity though more specific imagery and tales are glimpsed throughout as reference points.
'Freeze, Thaw, Chorus' was recorded in one session with one guitar track and a lot of ambient mics at Mill Hill Chapel in Leeds with Tom Goodall (Cattle/Super Luxury) of Mirrorman Audio. It will be released in August 2019.
